I am currently preparing for my sixth year teaching high school English in the Chicago suburbs. I going to be teaching English 2 and English 2 Honors, but I have taught English 1, English 3 and Creative Writing in the past. I also am a writer for many online publications. I maintain my own blog that discusses issues of equality, Small Strokes, and I was the founder of and executive editor for Equality 101.net, a site for teachers focused on diversity in the classroom and wrote for that site until February 2011. I left my position at Equality 101 to take a Senior Editor position at Gender Across Borders, an international feminist community where issues of gender, race, sexuality, and class are discussed and critically examined.
I graduated in May 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in English literature, a specialization in creative writing, and a 6-12 teaching certificate. In May 2010, I graduated with a Master’s of Arts in English Studies. I wrote my master’s thesis on Literacy in the Feminist Blogging Community which involved collecting interviews with women’s issues bloggers and analyzing their responses to find out how literacy creates a vital online community. I presented this paper at the Contemporary Women’s Writing: New Texts, Approaches, and Technologies conference at San Diego State University in July 2010.
When I am not planning lessons, grading, or writing articles, you can usually find me cooking extravagant meals, baking, reading, or playing MarioKart on Wii. I also spend a good deal of time fundraising for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which my mom and I do every summer. June 2011 was our seventh walk, and we have raised over $20,000 over the years for breast cancer research.
